Nona Patterson Chambers Scholarship Award
The Nona Chambers Scholarship was named in honor of our AKOMA mother, Nona Patterson Chambers. Mother Nona is our eldest and most beloved member. She has served as an example of what it really means to be a dedicated and humble Christian mother. Mother Nona is a faithful member whose quiet manner and beautiful smile make it very fitting that this scholarship be named in her honor.

A’nye Chandler A’nye’s father is Mr. Anthony Chandler. She will graduate from Edison Career & Technology High School and will be attending Buffalo State majoring in Forensic Science. Her school activities include Flag Football, Track and Field, 2nd Place Tennis Championship and Honor Roll. She attends In Christ New Hope Ministries where she participates in the Flag Ministry and choreographs for the Dance Ministry. A’nye is also a violinist with ROC Music and tutors with the Future Ready Program.
Judah Linton Judah is the daughter of Ms. Nija Quinn. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who graduated from Northstar Chrisian Academy and plans to attend SUNY Brockport majoring in Communications and minoring in African American Studies. Her school activities include Varsity Basketball, Varsity Track & Field, Flag Football and being the drummer for her school’s worship band. Judah attends In Christ New Hope Ministries, where she serves in the Youth Ministry and as the church drummer. She has also completed the Monroe County Sherrif’s Leadership Program.
Aniyah Matthews Aniyah’s parents are Mr. Marquis and Mrs. Whitley Matthews. She will be graduating from Pittsford Sutherland High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending SUNY Albany majoring in Environmental Science. Her goal is to become a veterinarian. Aniyah’s school activities included Concert Band, Link Crew, being a Princeston Race Relations Awardee and founding the Black Student Union at her High School. She is a Seneca Park Zoo Teen Captain, a Summit Leader for ROC 2 Change and volunteers at Lollipop Farm. Aniyah attends The Father’s House.
Aniyah Miles Dr. Chantz and Mrs. Selma Miles are Aniyah’s parents. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from Hilton Central High School and attend Syracuse University majoring in Biology in the Fall. She aspires to become a pediatrician. Aniyah’s school activities included National Honor Society, Lacrosse, Basketball, Band, Black Student Union and Student Council. She attends Northridge Church and has volunteered at the Rochester Family Mission and the Annual Greece Gauntlet Mud Run.
Dior Powell Dior is the daughter of Mr. Shawn and Mrs. Jonique Harris. She is graduating from Churchville-Chili Senior High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending Morgan State University majoring in nursing. She aspires to become a Registered Nurse and a Real Estate Entrepreneur. Her school activities included Cheerleading (Captain), Track and Field, Volleyball and High Honor Roll. She attends Memorial AME Zion Church where she serves as a Junior Usher, a Junior Counselor for the Church Summer Camp and is in the Youth Missionary Society. She has also volunteered at Sleep in Heavenly Places, the Jewish Community Center Camp as a Counselor and with the Zeta Phi Beta Children’s Group. Dior does all this while also working a part time job.
Laila Rowe Mr. LaRon and Mrs. Erica Rowe are Laila’s parents. She will graduate from Churchville-Chili Senior High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and attend the University of Rochester, majoring in Biological Sciences: Pre-Medicine. She desires to become a pediatrician. Her school activities included Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field, Varsity and JV Golf, Band Council (Secretary), Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Yearbook Club, Diversity Club, Leo Club, National, Foreign and World Honor Societies and receiving the University of Rochester Science Award. Laila attends the Father’s House where she serves the toddlers in Children’s Church. For nearly a decade, she has been a ballet dancer at the Hochstein School. Laila works part-time at Strong Memorial Hospital as a Nursing Assistant and has volunteered at Camp Stella Maris as a counselor and as a registration worker at several 5k races.
Alyssa Turner Alyssa is the daughter of Dr. Bradley Turner and Dr. Stella King-Turner. She will graduate from Pittsford Sutherland High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and attend Howard University majoring in Biology: Pre-Medicine and Minoring in Spanish. Destiny desires to become a Pediatric Surgeon specializing in orthopedics so she can build equity and inclusion in medicine. Her school activities included Varsity Tennis (Captain), Varsity Track and Field, Black Student Union (Treasurer), ROC 2 Change, and High Honor Roll. Alyssa has received the Jack and Jill Distinguished Teen Award and has held the offices of President, Vice President and Treasurer. She was an intern at the Rochester Ambulatory Surgery Center and worked a part-time job during high school.
Jermonnie Vann Mr. Kenneth Rivers and Ms. Natasha Knorr are Jermonnie’s parents. She will graduate from Our Lady of Mercy High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and attend SUNY Brockport majoring in Biochemistry. Her goal is to become a Pediatrician / Orthopedic Surgeon. Her school activities included Orchestra and Flag Football. Jermonnie attends Changing Lives Ministry House of Prayer where she participates in the Youth Group, serves in the Children’s Church and enjoys decorating the sanctuary.
Nyah Wragg Nyah’s is the daughter of Rev. Dr. Melany J. Silas-Chandler. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from Rush Henrietta High School and attend Berklee School of Music majoring in Music
Business, Performance and Production. She desires to create meaningful music while also understanding the business side of the industry. Her school activities included National Honor Society (Treasurer), Spanish Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society (Historian), RH Singers Choral Council, Spotlight Theater Council (Treasurer), Mama Mia Play (Lead), NYSMAA Area All State Award, Link Crew, Web Leader and Bible Club. Nyah attends Trinity Emmanual Presbyterian Church where she serves in the Adult Choir (Soloist), the Children’s Church and the Flag Ministry. She also worked a summer job and earned the Girl Scout’s Silver Award.

Kyla Batiste Kyla is the daughter of Marcus and Monifa Batiste. She will graduate from Penfield High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending Ithaca College majoring in Film and minoring in Theater and Dance. She aspires to become a Filmmaker. Her school activities include Black Student Union, Drama Club, National Honor Society, and Juneteenth Programs. She attends New Progressive Cathedral C.O.G.I.C. where she assists in the Children’s Ministry, Media and Visual Effects Team, Dance Ministry and Praise Team. Kyla has also worked as a camp counselor, a literacy aid and a summer intern in film with the City of Rochester.
Juanita BishopJuanita’s parents are Ap Bishop and Princess Sobah. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from Churchville-Chili Senior High School and plans to attend St. John Fisher University majoring in nursing. Her school activities include Tennis, Basketball, National Honor Society, and World Language Honor Society. Juanita also enjoys volunteering at the Lotus Festival, the Chili Library and Food Link.
Hannah BurnettHannah is the daughter of Curtis and Heashla Burnett. She graduated from The Charles Finney School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending Kent State University where she’ll major in Biology on a Premedical track. She hopes to become a physician or surgeon. Her school activities included Varsity Softball, Junior Varsity (Captain), Junior Varsity Volleyball, and the U of R’s Science & Technology Entry (STEP) Program. Hannah attends Greater Harvest Church where she serves as a Youth Choir Leader, Dance Team Leader, and the Youth Group. In addition to all her activities, she volunteered at a local daycare center and participated in Project Compassion’s Mission Trip to Oregon and Washington.
Gabrielle LautureGabrielle’s parents are Tiona I. McCauley and Emmanual J. Lauture. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from Webster Thomas High School and attend Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in Psychology. She aspires to practice as a Child Psychologist, helping those who suffer from brain injuries. Gabrielle’s school activities included JV and Lakefront Soccer, Bowling, Golf, Marching band (Section Leader), Tri-M Society and World Language Honor Society. She attends In Christ New Hope Ministry, where she serves in the Judah Dance Ministry and the Audio / Visual Ministry.
Sydney ParkerSydney’s mother is Alexis D. Burgess. She is graduating from Churchville-Chili Senior High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending Nova Southeastern University majoring in nursing. She aspires to become a Registered Nurse. Her school activities included Track, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball (MVP), Basketball, National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and Archonette Club. Sydney attends Ebenezer Baptist Church where she serves in the Youth Choir and as a Youth Usher. She has also volunteered at the Chili Public Library and with the Leo Club at the Bergen Water Garden. Sydney has also penned a very fitting poem, Embracing Tomorrow, for her fellow graduates.
Hazel RobertsHazel is the daughter of Danette L. Wortham-Coston. She will graduate from Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School as an Urban League Black Scholar. She will be attending Hampton University, majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Psychology; followed by law school. She desires to become the CEO of multiple Fortune 500 companies and to serve as a United States Supreme Court Justice. Her school activities included Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field (Captain), Volleyball (Captain), Golf, Rochester City School District Board of Education, Student Body (President), Student Leadership Congress (President), Yearbook Club and Wilson Culture Club. She frequents North Ridge Church and Calvary Hill. She is the CEO of Aspect Moon and has volunteered as a student aid and Intern at the Rochester City Court.
Destiny StroughterDestiny’s parents are Michael and Nicole Stroughter. She will graduate from Rochester Early College International High School and attend Plattsburgh University majoring in Psychology. Destiny desires to become a Psychotherapist so she can help people of all ages deal with difficult emotions. Her school activities included Book Club and High Honor Roll. She is graduating a year ahead of schedule with college credits from Monroe Community College. Destiny attends Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church where she participates in the Liturgical Dance Ministry and on the Youth Usher Board. She has also worked a part-time job during her time in high school.

Felyna CharlesFelyna is the daughter of Keyanna McClarty. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from East Rochester Junior-Senior High School and plans to attend Oakland University where she will be majoring in Biology and minor in Psychology. She will attend Medical School to become a psychiatrist. Her school activities include Varsity Volleyball, National Honor Society, and Diversity Ambassadors Club (Secretary). Felyna attends New Ebenezer SdA Church where she participates in the Youth Praise Team, Youth Congress, Pathfinder Club (Counselor) and Adventurers. She also works a part time job.
Amirah Cunningham
Amirah is the daughter of Karima A. Miller. She will graduate from James Monroe High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending Spelman College majoring in Health Sciences. She aspires to become a Physician Associate. Her school activities include Flag Football (Captain), Cheerleading (Captain), District Scholar Athlete of the Year, High Honor Roll, Student Ambassador, and Roc Restorative Leader. Amirah graduated a year early and is Monroe County’s youngest Phlebotomy Technician certificate recipient. She has also earned her Pharmacy Technicians certificate. She attends Faith Church where she assists in the Children’s Ministry. Amirah has also worked at STAR (Shine Together and Rise) Peer Tutoring and Teen Empowerment.
Olivia Grant
Olivia’s parents are Peter and Leslie Grant. She graduated from Greece Olympia High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending Utica University where she’ll major in Business Management. She hopes to own a Real Estate Firm in the future. Her school activities included Varsity Basketball, Varsity Lacrosse, Black Student Union, and RIT’s Liberty Partnership Program. Olivia attends Full Gospel Tabernacle where she serves as a Youth Usher, on the Youth Praise Team and in the Youth Choir. In addition to all her activities, she also has a part time job.
Tristyn Nguessamble
Tristyn’s parents are Jean Nguessamble and Valerie Medley. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from Our Lady of Mercy and attend West Virginia University majoring in Forensic Science. She aspires to do crime scene investigation upon completing her education. Tristyn’s school activities included Social Media and Publicity Manager for the Green Team, Black Student Union, President’s Cabinet, Yoga, Ski, Red Cross and Mercy Service Clubs and High Honor Roll. She attends Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, where she serves in the Liturgical Dance Ministry, the Choir, the Flag Ministry, the Children’s department and during Youth Summer Camp. Tristyn has volunteered at Food Link, the Open Door Mission, Bethany House and at Legacy Retirement homes. She also maintains part-time employment.
Stephanie Osbiotse
Stephanie’s parents are Andy and Funke Osbiotse. She graduates from Rush-Henrietta Senior High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and will be attending the University of Albany majoring in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and minoring in Music Performance for clarinet and tenor saxophone. She aspires to become a Lead Research Scientist or Pharmacist. Her school activities included Diversity Club, Link Crew Leader, National Honor Society, National Foreign Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, U of R’s Science & Technology Entry (STEP) Program, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Hochstein Youth Wind Symphony Ensemble, and All County / All State NYSSMA. Stephanie attends Faith Church where she serves as a Children’s Church Check-in worker and class volunteer. She also works a part time job.
Ilon Simmons
Ilon is the daughter of Pastor Terrance and First Lady Laniece Simmons. She will graduate from Webster Schroeder High School as an Urban League Black Scholar. She will attending Morgan State University majoring in Biochemistry. Her desire is to become a Physician Anesthesiologist upon completing her education. Her school activities included Track and Field, Black Student Union and the D.R.E.A.M Club which is a Diversity and Equality collaborative. She attends Mt. Calvary Church of God in Christ where she serves in the Youth choir and as a Praise Team Leader. She also plays the organ and works in the Youth Department. Ilon has also been a Youth Inspirational Speaker at her church. She is also a part time hair stylist.
Katarina Terrell
Katarina is the daughter of Robert and Katrina Terrell. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from the School of the Arts. She will enroll at Morgan State University majoring in Fine Arts with a concentration in Illustration. Her school activities included Varsity Basketball, National Honor Society and High Honor Roll. Katarina has served as a counselor at Legacy Drama Summer Camp and Camp Smiles for the Visually Impaired / Blind. She attends Mt. Olivet Baptist Church where she participates in the Photography and Communications Ministries and on the Youth Usher Board.
Jyonnah Ware
Jyonnah is the daughter of Demetric and Yonite Pentelton. She is an Urban League Black Scholar who graduating from Brockport High School via the Urban Suburban program. She will enroll at Fordham University majoring in Acting and minoring in Theatre Performance with a Vocal PE with aspirations to perform on Broadway as well as direct. Her school activities included the Be You – Unity and Diversity Club (President), National Honor Society, Student Council, the Principal’s Advisory Committee, Treble Choir, Bella Voci, Jazz Ensemble, and Tri-M Music Society. She attends Fountain Missionary Baptist Church where she serves in the Youth Choir and on the Usher Board. She also maintained a part-time job working at Geva Theater.
Tamera Witcher
Tamera’s parents are Chad and Tyesha Witcher. She will graduate from Rush-Henrietta Senior High School as an Urban League Black Scholar and enroll at Pennsylvania State University majoring in Foreign Languages and International Policy and minoring in Music Theory. Tamera has aspirations of becoming a US Ambassador. Her school activities included National Honor society, World Language Honor Society, Link Crew, Varsity Lacrosse and Varsity Track and Field (Caption). She has already obtained her Spanish literacy certification which qualifies her as bi-lingual. Tamera attends Full Gospel Tabernacle, Inc. where she is active as a Youth Musician, on the Youth Praise Team and Choir, and in the Drama Troupe. She has volunteered at Food Link and Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Jazmine Saunders’ mother is Nyla Saunders. Jazmine is an Urban League Black Scholar attending Greece Odyssey Academy where she is the class valedictorian. She will attend The Eastman School of Music, majoring in Vocal Performance. Jazmine’s goal is to become an Opera Singer. Her activities include Student Council, Odyssey Music and Drama, Symphonic Band, and the National Honor Society. Jazmine attends Faith Temple in Brighton, where she is active as a Praise and Worship Leader, FT Dance Team member and a Nursery team member.

Brianna Brown Brianna Brown is the daughter of Norman and Kim Brown. She has graduated from Aquinas Institute of Rochester as an Urban League Black Scholar. Her activities include basketball, dance, the President’s Club and Honor Roll. She also works part-time as a youth worker for the Town of Gates Recreational Department. Brianna attends Aenon Baptist Church where she is active as a leader of the Praise Dance team and the Girl Scouts. She also participates in the youth choir, Alpha Drama team and as a youth usher. Brianna will attend the University at Buffalo and plans to major in Political Science and Pre-Law. Kenya Calvin Kenya Calvin’s parents are Mathis and Stacy Calvin, a former AKOMA Sister. She’s graduating from Webster Thomas High School as an Urban League Black Scholar. Her activities include the Bowling Team, Drama Club, Women’s Choir and Leadership Club. Kenya also tutors in her spare time. She attends Pentecostal Miracle Deliverance Center Church where she is active on the Youth Praise Team. Kenya serves as a leader in the Audio Visual Technical Department and has served as an usher and in the nursery. Kenya will be attending SUNY Polytechnic Institute and plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. Brooke Duncan Brooke Duncan is the daughter of Trina and Bryon Duncan. She will graduate from Gates Chili High School as an Urban League Black Scholar. Her activities include captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, Model UN Best New Delegate and National Honor Society. Brooke attends The Father’s House where she serves in Kid’s Ministry, the Step Team and on the Love Renovation Missions team. She will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology where she will major in Biomedical Science with the desire to become a Physician’s Assistant. Ashley Hall Ashley Hall’s mother is Ruthie Hall. She is an Urban League Black Scholar attending Gates Chili High School. Ashley’s activities include the marching band, chorus, the show choir, the Spanish Club, the National Honor Society and Tri-M; the Music Honor Society. She attends Aenon Baptist Church where she is a Youth Usher, Sacred Dancer and a Praise Team leader. Ashley will attend Roberts Wesleyan College where she will major in Psychology. Faith Snipes Faith Snipes is the daughter of Fimone and Elijah Snipes. She has graduated from Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women as an Urban League Black Scholar. Her activities are Varsity Rowing Team, Youth Government and Spiritual leader for the Junior Retreat. She attends Bethel Christian Fellowship where she is active as a childcare teacher, youth group worship leader and a missionary to Bogota, Columbia. Faith will attend Goucher College and intends to major in Political Science and International Relations. Brianna Vasciannie Brianna Vasciannie’s mother is Harriett Vasciannie. She is an Urban League Black Scholar attending Rush-Henrietta Senior High School. Brianna’s activities include STEP; Science and Technology Entry Program, Dance Club, African American Leadership League, Martin Luther King Singers, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Tri-M; Music Honor Society. Brianna attends Second Baptist Church of Mumford where she is active as a SAVE Youth Missions leader, with vacation bible school and serves as a violinist. She will attend SUNY Brockport majoring in Biology and African American Studies. Brianna’s goal is to become a Cardiovascular Surgeon. Brielle Vasciannie Brielle Vasciannie’s mother is Harriett Vasciannie. She is an Urban League Black Scholar attending Rush-Henrietta Senior High School. Briellie’s activities include STEP; Science and Technology Entry Program, Dance Club, African American Leadership League, Martin Luther King Singers, Spanish Honor Society and Tri-M; Music Honor Society. Jada’s activities include Bowling and Softball, the Spirit of Freedom Award and 21st Century Abolitionist and National Society for High School Scholars. She attends Church of Jesus Christ, Inc. Associate where she serves as a Sunday school assistant and illustrator, as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and with the Junior Young Persons group. Jada will be attending Nazareth College majoring in Physical Therapy.
AKOMA Descendants AKOMA descendants are children of active AKOMA members who are graduating from High School. In 2016 AKOMA recognizes two AKOMA sons with a love token of congratulations. Elwyn O. Jones, III Elwyn O. Jones, III (Tre’) is the son of Donna M. Jones, AKOMA’s current Treasurer, Scholarship Commission Chairperson and Finance Committee Chairperson. He is an Urban League Black Scholar who will graduate from Rush-Henrietta Senior High School. Tre’ will be attending the Monroe Community College / Rochester Institute of Technology two plus two program majoring in Computer Science. Jordan J. McCullough Jordan J. McCullough is the son of John and Gloria McCullough. Gloria currently serves as AKOMA’s Attendance Clerk and on the Scholarship Commission. Jordan will graduate from Penfield High School. He will be attending either SUNY Brockport or Buffalo State majoring in Political Science with aspirations to become a lawyer.

Te’Asia Buckner Te’Asia is the daughter of Alicia Scott and Theodore Buckner. She will graduate from Pittsford Sutherland High School with an Advanced Regents diploma. Her activities include Interact Club, Women’s Chorale and Music Honor Society. Te’Asia’s church home is New Bethel CME Church where she is active in the Youth Fellowship, Voices of Praise and is Present of the Mattie E. Coleman Youth Missionary Society. She will attend Hampton University and plans to become a Certified Public Accountant. Keela Glover Keela Glover’s parents are Keela and Kent Glover. She is a senior at Gates Chili High School and will graduate as a Black Scholar. Her activities include the concert choir, Active For Autism, the Spanish club and the Villa of Hope. She attends Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where she serves in the Cornerstone Dance Ministry, as Vice-President of the Youth Choir, the Junior Usher Board and Vacation Bible School volunteer. Keela will attend Alabama State University and intends to become a Physician’s Assistant.
Emem-Esther Ikpot Emem-Esther Ikpot is the daughter of Zacch and Nseabasi Ikpot. A senior at Our Lady of Mercy High School, she is a Black Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and has taken a number of Advanced Placement Courses. In school she plays in the Jazz Ensemble and the Mercy Orchestra, is co-captain of the track and field team and is active with the campus ministry board. Her church home is Central Church of Christ where she is the youth choir director, a member of the youth group, involved with the dance ministry and is a nursery helper. Emem will major in Biology at Cornell University and plans to become a Pediatric Dentist.
Andrea Johnson Andrea Johnson’s parents are Ray and June Johnson. She will graduate from Brighton High School as a Black Scholar having taken Advanced Placement Courses. Andrea participates in the Yearbook, Art and Photo Clubs and is Captain of the Track & Field Team. Andrea is a member of Jefferson Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church where she is active as an usher, a leader of the Pathfinders Club and the Adventist Youth Society. Her future plans include attending the University of Rochester with the goal of becoming a Pediatric Neurologist.
Jordann Myers Jordann Myers is the daughter of Ernest and Jacqueline Myers. She is a senior at Webster Thomas High School and a Black Scholar who will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation having taken Advanced Placement Courses. Some of her school activities include Masterminds, Future Business Leaders, Business and Marketing Honor Society, Basketball and Track. In addition, she is a part of the United Way of Rochester’s Emerging Leaders Program, the Society of Certified Public Accountants COAP program and the Girl Scouts. An active member of New Bethel CME Church, Jordann is an acolyte, a member of the Youth Choir, former President of the Christian Youth Fellowship, the Mattie E. Coleman Missionary Society, a Girl Scout and member of the Liturgical Ministry Dance Team. She will attend Le Moyne College majoring in Marketing, eventually obtaining an MBA and becoming a Chief Marketing Officer.
Abigail Noel Abigail Noel‘s parents are Samuel and Collette Noel. A senior at Aquinas Institute of Rochester she is an Urban League Black Scholar who has taken Advanced Placement and Honors Courses. Abigail has been a student council Vice-President, member of the Women’s Leadership Pro-gram and the National Honor Society. Her additional activities include being a Big Brothers and Big Sisters Mentor as well as serving as Concertmaster of Hochstein Youth Symphony. She has earned numerous awards. Abigail is a member of Joy Community Church where she is a member of the Worship Team as well as a Children’s Ministry Teaching Assistant and assists with child-care. She will attend Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania with the goal of becoming a Certified Public Account and Business Lawyer. She will minor in music.
Sarah Peterson Sarah Peterson’s mother is Alberta Peterson. She is an Urban League Black Scholar attending Joseph C. Wilson Commencement High School. Sarah’s activities include cheerleading, tennis, and cross-country. She participated in the Hillside Work Scholarship Connection and Women’s Leadership. She volunteers at Food Link and St. John’s Nursing Home. At New Bethel C.M. E. Church she is a member of the children’s and youth choir, the Maddie E. Coleman Society and the technical support team. Sarah will attend Keuka College with the goal of becoming an adolescent Clinical Psychologist.
Taylor Walker Taylor Walker is the daughter of Robert and Tiamesha Smith-Walker. She is a graduating Junior at Irondequoit High School with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Distinction having taken Advanced Placement Courses and is an Urban League Black Scholar. She has a number of awards credited to her. Her after school activities include the Varsity swim team, alternative Energy Club, Clean Sweep and Girl Scouts. At Christian Friendship Baptist Church, Taylor is Captain of the Spiritual Dance Team, a member of the kitchen committee and the youth department. Taylor will attend North Carolina State University majoring in Marine Science and Oceanography. She plans to work for the Environmental Protection Agency with an emphasis on Coral Reef protection.

Tamera Witcher

Tamera Witcher is a 2024 Akoma scholarship recipient. She graduated from Rush-Henrietta Senior High School in Rochester, New York, in 2024, and she was also an Urban League Black Scholar.
Tamera is a freshman at Penn State University Park, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Spanish. With a PLSC and Spanish degree, Tamera hopes to use her knowledge to help underprivileged communities.
Tamera is currently a member of club track and field. Not only does she compete, she helps fundraise money for an organization called THON. THON is the biggest student-run philanthropy committed to providing emotional & financial support to families effected by childhood cancer. Tamera is still exploring the exact career that she wants to pursue. However, she is leaning towards being a Social and Community Services Manager so that she can facilitate and oversee programs that will support her community.
Arianna McKnight

Arianna McKnight is a 2022 Akoma Nona Patterson Chambers Scholar. She is a 2022 graduate of Rush-Henrietta High School in Rochester, NY, and an Urban League Black Scholar. She is a rising sophomore attending the University of Chicago, majoring in Biology. Arianna chose UChicago because of its academic prestige, as it is ranked amongst the top 10 best universities in the nation. Also, her current pre-med track is considered one of UChicago’s most rigorous programs. Arianna plans to attend medical school after her undergraduate education and pursue a career in pediatric medicine.
Arianna has a strong sense of community and volunteerism from her high school years, as she served as a leader in her church, the National Honor Society, the Youth Asset Team, and as a Girl Scout Ambassador. This, coupled with participating in medical immersion programs and taking advanced placement courses has equipped Arianna with the skills necessary to pursue a higher education within the medical field. She has been passionate about helping the underserved ever since she was young, and her experiences throughout the years have motivated her to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
In the 2022-23 academic term, Arianna took the initiative to form her own network of friendships via social media. She connected with her future peers and formed lasting friendships through Instagram that have continued to this day. Her core support system has been a bulwark of needed stability throughout her first year at college, and she is grateful for the sense of community that she feels on campus.
Arianna landed her first internship as a rising sophomore, which starts in August 2023. She will be working as a Research Assistant in the Hospitalist Project. This project is based at the University of Chicago’s Medical Division and focuses on collecting research about current patient healthcare, in order to make necessary improvements. Arianna is working with a team of Research Assistants to make this project succeed, and she looks forward to working diligently in the hospital setting to best serve patients’ needs.
Arianna is a rising star and we at the BWLC Foundation can not wait to see how she illuminates her surroundings in the years to come. We are excited to continue to support her going forward.
Jazmine C. Saunders
Saunders is also a 2018 AKOMA Nona Patterson Chambers Scholar who graduated as Valedictorian from Greece Odyssey Academy. With Akoma’s support in 2020, she participated in the prestigious “Si Parla Si Canta” summer music program in Arona, Italy. She will be in the role of Gilda in Rigoletto on August 7th and 10th at the Robert F. Sydney Barrett

Sydney Barrett is a 2017 AKOMA Scholar, graduating from Fairport High School as an Urban League Black Scholar. She has begun her senior year at Xavier University in New Orleans, where she is a pre-med student majoring in biology.Sydney chose Xavier because of its diversity and the connection Xavier has with the University of Rochester (U of R) School of Medicine and Dentistry. Xavier is ranked as the third highest HBCU academically in the country and graduates the highest number of minorities that go on to attend medical school. Because of the program between Xavier and the University of Rochester, Sydney was able to apply to medical school at U of R at the end of her sophomore year and has already been accepted. She will begin medical school in the fall of 2021.
Sydney has demonstrated a strong sense of giving back to the community since high school. She tutored children at Abraham Lincoln School No. 22 in Rochester, New York while in high school and has continued to tutor young children while in college. In the summer of 2019, she also participated in an undergraduate research program in the Office of Health / Equity with the University of Michigan. In her spare time Sydney enjoys playing the cello and watching the NBA.

With Akoma’s support, Nubia earned her BSN from Nazareth College (’22) and became a Registered Nurse soon after. Now, she helps bring new life into the world while fostering a positive work environment as a Retention Committee and Nurse Residency Advisory Council member. 💙
